Very often, you see the oh-so slick and beautifully-crafted logo designs of your favorite sports teams. But, have you ever wondered how the designs evolved into what you see now, the completed logos? Well, there is an interesting world that combines logo design with the related discipline of illustration. In this post, I’m here to show you how my project for the San Jacinto College’s three campuses went, step-by-step.
It seems lately that there is a real interest in the ‘analog’ skill of hand lettering. Even though the digital design world’s best type designers are always improving the many styles and ligature options that today’s fonts can offer, there is always a need for something less refined, less clean and tidy—you know, real.
Another lettering assignment. This time it’s for a new vintner with the name of Zelos. The name ‘Zelos’, or Zelus in Greek mythology personifies dedication, emulation, eager rivalry, envy, jealousy, and zeal. The English word “zeal” is derived from his name. So, I had a chance to really interpret the name with the character of the letterforms and I really think there was some good variety to choose from. The project was for a client of Damion Hickman Design.
‘How’d you do that?’ is a common response when someone sees my logo lettering samples for the first time. It seems in this modern world with thousands of fonts available to anyone on a computer, we’ve lost some of the ‘old school’ skills of hand work. And it seems to be coming back.
